Appendix L: Experiment 2 Matrix Test Instructions
The following instructions were displayed on the computer at all times for the matrix test, which was completed on the computer. A screenshot of the matrix test interface is shown in Figure 10.
Instructions
Please complete this matrix. Click on a cell within the matrix to select a kind of connection between each pair of characters or webpages on the website you just used.
On your first click, you will see the word “Link.” This means that the characters connected by that cell are linked within the website, but their characters are not related within the story.
On your second click of the same cell, you will see the word “Relate.” This means that the characters on the website are related to each other in the story (i.e., they were siblings, married, lovers, ex-lovers, friends, roommates, friends, or enemies), but their webpages are not linked together in the website.
On your third click of the same cell, you will see the word “Both.” This means that the characters are related in the story (e.g., they were siblings, married, etc.) and that their webpages are linked together on the website.
On your fourth click of the same cell, the cell will be blank. You can continue to cycle through the options again if you need to, or just leave it blank if there is no connection.
When you are done, click the “Finish” button. You can only click on this button when you have identified 8 cells with “Link” connections, 8 with “Relate” connections, and 16 with “Both” connections. You must have exactly these numbers of connections within the matrix to proceed. The total number of selected connections for each type of connection is displayed to the left of this text.
If you have any questions, please ask them now. If not, please begin.
